Measure and cut new treads from standard 5/4 decking lumber, which is typically 1 inch thick and 5.5 inches wide. First, use a circular saw to square up one end of a new board, ensuring a clean and straight edge. A speed square can be clamped in place with your hand to act as a guide for the saw's sole plate, taking off approximately 3/4 of an inch. Next, pull a measurement from this squared end to determine the required length for the tread. Mark this measurement with a crow's foot and draw a straight line using a speed square and pencil. To make the cut safely and effectively, place the lumber on a scrap 2x4 as a prop block. This elevates the board off the ground and creates leverage, allowing the cut-off piece to fall away, which prevents blade binding. Use the speed square again as a guide for the circular saw, aligning the outside of the blade's tooth with the marked cut line, and then make the cut. Cut all replacement pieces to the required dimensions at once.
