The first step involves calculating the precise dimensions for your stair stringers. You will need the total height from the subfloor to the finished floor of the upper level. For this project, the height is 110 1/2 inches. The video recommends using a specialized construction calculator, such as the Construction Master Pro, to easily determine the riser height. Input the total floor-to-floor height (110.5 inches) as the 'rise' into the calculator, then press the 'stair' button to automatically calculate the individual riser height. In this case, it's 7 3/8 inches. If you don't have a construction calculator, you can use simple math by dividing the total height by your desired number of treads to find an approximate riser height. Also, consider your desired tread width, usually using a 2x12 for the treads themselves, and plan for a nosing (overhang) of approximately 1 1/4 inches.
