After all hardwood risers and treads are securely installed, the final step is to stain and clear coat them for lasting appeal and protection. Apply your chosen wood stain evenly to all hardwood surfaces using a brush or rag. Work in small sections, wiping off excess stain according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you have existing hardwood under the carpet that was previously damaged or faded, sand it down thoroughly before applying stain to achieve a uniform finish. Allow the stain to dry completely. Finally, apply multiple coats of a clear coat finish, such as polyurethane, following the product's guidelines for application and drying time between coats, to protect the wood from wear and tear.
