Calculate Waste Percentage — Count Your Steps & Landings
Part of project
Stair Treads · Step 1 of 4
In this video
A common mistake people make is not accounting for waste. For flooring projects, it's essential to add an additional 10% to your total calculated square footage. This extra material covers cuts, potential mistakes, dropped or damaged pieces, and defective material. To calculate 10% of your total (148 sq ft in this example), multiply 148 by 0.10, which equals 14.8 sq ft. Alternatively, a quick trick is to move the decimal point one place to the left (148.0 becomes 14.8).
