Steps
Prepare Your Stairs for a Perfect Fit
15 minutesA great installation starts with a clean slate. Dust, dirt, or even a little grease can prevent our special adhesive from creating a secure bond, leading to shifting or lifting. Use a vacuum or cloth to wipe each step clean, and let it dry completely—even a hint of moisture can weaken the grip. For any rough spots, a light sanding will do the trick. A crucial safety tip: never apply treads to freshly painted or varnished stairs; allow the finish to cure fully first for a bond you can trust.

5 minutesUse a pencil or a piece of chalk to mark the center point on each stair. This simple guide ensures every tread lines up beautifully for an elegant look. And since your Oak Valley Designs treads are custom-made to fit, you can focus on placement without worrying about trimming.

5 minutesThis is our favorite 'measure twice, stick once' tip. Simply lay each tread in its designated spot—with the backing still on—to double-check your alignment. It’s a no-stress way to gain confidence before the final application and ensure you love the placement.

5 minutesWe always recommend working from the top step down. This simple strategy prevents you from disturbing the treads as you work your way to the bottom. Once you're ready, peel the film off your first tread, line it up with your center mark, and gently place it on the stair. No nails, no glue, no stress.

5 minutesThis technique ensures a perfect, bubble-free application. Starting from the center, apply firm pressure and smooth your hands towards the edges. This pushes out any trapped air. Give the entire surface, especially the corners and edges, one final press to ensure every inch is securely bonded to the stair. A small hand roller or even a flat, sturdy object can help you apply even pressure.
Watch: Press Down FirmlyComplete the Installation and Test
10 minutesContinue the 'peel, stick, and press' method one step at a time. After you've installed the final tread, walk your newly transformed stairs to test the bond. If you notice any edge lifting slightly, just press it down firmly again. The beauty of our non-damaging adhesive is the peace of mind it offers; you can carefully lift and reposition a tread if needed without harming your beautiful wood stairs. Just peel slowly and the adhesive will release cleanly.
