Step 4 · Measure Depth and Check for Safety

Safety is paramount, especially for families with children or pets. First, measure the depth of the step from the front edge (the nose) to the back at its deepest part. Now, let's verify two critical safety standards. The narrowest part of your step must be at least 6 inches wide. Next, find the 'walk line'—an imaginary path where people naturally step, about 12 inches out from the narrow edge. The depth here must be at least 10 inches to provide a secure foothold. Finally, the difference in depth at this walk line between your largest and smallest winder treads should not be more than ⅜ inch. These checks ensure your stairs aren't just beautiful, but built for everyday life.
