To add a final decorative touch and conceal any minor gaps between the tread and riser, cove molding is installed along the underside of the new nosing. Begin by measuring the exact length required for each section of cove molding. Cut the cove molding to these measured lengths using a miter saw, ensuring precise cuts for a tight fit. Before permanent attachment, dry fit each piece of molding to confirm it flexes and fits well against any irregularities of the old riser. This separate installation of cove molding is advantageous as its inherent flexibility allows it to conform to slight imperfections along the old riser, achieving a seamless and polished look. Once satisfied with the fit, secure the cove molding in place using an 18-gauge finish nail gun.
