Measure, Cut, and Install New Treads (Standard Steps) — Step 4: Record, Label, and Double-Check
Part of project
measurements · Step 4 of 4
In this video
After the risers are in place, the standard rectangular treads are installed. Each tread, the horizontal surface of a step, must be measured accurately for its length and depth, including any overhang over the riser. The video displays wooden treads, likely pre-finished engineered wood or solid wood, chosen for their durability and aesthetic appeal. Using a measuring tape and pencil, mark the dimensions onto the new tread material. A miter saw or circular saw can be used for precise straight cuts. Apply construction adhesive to the top of the existing sub-tread and the top edge of the newly installed riser. Carefully place the new tread, ensuring it is flush against the back wall and has an even overhang. Press firmly and optionally secure with a nail gun and finishing nails for a robust installation. Work from the bottom step upwards to maintain alignment.
