Step 2 · Measure Each Tread's Depth

Let's measure the depth, or 'run,' of each step. Place your tape measure firmly against the vertical riser at the back. Extend it straight across the surface to the very tip of the front edge, which is called the 'nosing.' Keeping the tape measure flat and level is key to an accurate measurement. Important Safety Note: Always measure the bare wood. Measuring on top of old carpet, padding, or leftover adhesive will throw off your dimensions and prevent a secure, safe fit for your new treads.
