Step 3 · Determine Your Ideal Tread Width

With depth recorded, it's time for width. Run your tape measure along the front edge of the tread, parallel to the riser. If your stairs are between two walls, measure wall-to-wall. If one or both sides are open, measure the full width of the wooden step. For that classic, professionally-finished look that allows your beautiful wood to frame the tread, we recommend leaving about a 1-inch border on each side. This means your custom tread width would be 2 inches less than the total stair width, a design choice that brings warmth and elegance to your home.
