Measure Staircase Treads
About This Project
Getting a perfect fit for your new stair treads starts with precise measurements. Because no two staircases are exactly alike, it's essential to measure each individual step to account for the subtle variations common in any home. This guide will walk you through measuring the width and depth of each tread, ensuring your custom-made treads will elevate your staircase with a flawless, professional finish. Following these steps is the key to making your stairs safer, more stylish, and built for everyday life.
Steps
Step 1: Count Your Treads & Gather Your Tools
5 minutesStart by counting the number of individual steps, or 'treads,' you'll be covering. A helpful tip: you'll always have one more 'riser' (the vertical part of the stair) than you have treads. Setting yourself up for success is easy! Just grab a few household tools: a rigid tape measure for accuracy, a carpenter's square for true angles, a level to check for flatness, some masking tape for easy labeling, and a pencil and paper to jot down your notes.

15 minutesFor each step, place your tape measure against the vertical riser at the back and extend it straight over the front edge, including the rounded part known as the 'nosing.' It's crucial for safety and a seamless look that your tape measure stays flat and level. Be sure to measure the actual wood surface—avoid measuring over old carpet, staples, or adhesive residue, as this will prevent your new treads from lying flat and adhering properly.

15 minutesTo measure the width, run your tape measure across the front edge of the tread, parallel to the back riser. If your stairs run between two walls, measure from wall to wall. For stairs with an open side, measure from the wall to the finished outer edge. For a classic, high-end look, many homeowners leave about a 1-inch border of exposed wood on each side. This is a design-conscious choice that beautifully frames your new treads.

10 minutesAs you measure the width and depth of each tread, write down the dimensions in your notebook, numbering them from the bottom step to the top. It's very common for steps in a home to have slight differences! If you find a step with unique measurements, use a small piece of masking tape to label it with its corresponding number. When ordering custom-made treads, providing these precise, individual measurements—and even a quick photo of each step—ensures we can craft a product that fits your staircase perfectly, giving you peace of mind and a beautiful, DIY-friendly result.
