Step 3 · Step 3: Determine Your Ideal Tread Width

To measure the width, run your tape measure across the front edge of the tread, parallel to the back riser. If your stairs run between two walls, measure from wall to wall. For stairs with an open side, measure from the wall to the finished outer edge. For a classic, high-end look, many homeowners leave about a 1-inch border of exposed wood on each side. This is a design-conscious choice that beautifully frames your new treads.
