Steps
Measure the Left Side of a Step
5 minutesStart on one side of a representative stair step. Place your tape measure against the 'riser' (the vertical part of the stair) and measure straight out to the very edge of the 'nosing' (the lip of the step). Jot down this number. This gives you the first data point for your tread's usable surface area.

5 minutesStaying on the same step, move your tape measure to the other side and repeat the process. Measure from the riser straight out to the front edge of the nosing. Write this measurement down next to your first one. Comparing these two will immediately tell you if your treads have any taper.

10 minutesTo be extra thorough, it's wise to take one or two more measurements across the width of the same step, for example, in the exact center. This helps you confirm the tread's narrowest point with certainty. We recommend repeating this process on a few different stairs (top, middle, and bottom) to get a complete picture.

3 minutesLook at all the numbers you've written down from your checks. The single smallest measurement you found is the most important one. This is your 'minimum safe depth,' and it's the key to ensuring a secure and proper fit that provides peace of mind for your family.

2 minutesWith your narrowest depth identified, you're ready to elevate your staircase! For the best combination of safety and style, you'll want to select a tread depth that is equal to this measurement. This ensures full coverage without any unsafe overhang. Our treads are proudly made in the USA to fit your stairs perfectly, making for an easy DIY stair remodel.
