Step 2 · Measure the Right Side of the Same Step

Staying on the same step, move your tape measure to the other side and repeat the process. Measure from the riser straight out to the front edge of the nosing. Write this measurement down next to your first one. Comparing these two will immediately tell you if your treads have any taper.
