Step 1 · Measure the Left Side of a Step

Start on one side of a representative stair step. Place your tape measure against the 'riser' (the vertical part of the stair) and measure straight out to the very edge of the 'nosing' (the lip of the step). Jot down this number. This gives you the first data point for your tread's usable surface area.
