Once the dial indicator is properly zeroed, it is ready to measure depths. Place the base of the instrument firmly and squarely across the opening of the cavity or feature you wish to measure. For example, the presenter places it over the bolt face of a Remington rifle. Gently lower the indicator stem into the cavity until its tip makes contact with the bottom surface. The dial will then display a direct reading of the depth. In the demonstration, the measurement shown is approximately 0.142 inches. The stability provided by the base eliminates concerns about tipping or misalignment that often occur with standard calipers, ensuring a more accurate and repeatable measurement.
