measure turning treads
About This Project
Getting the perfect fit for turning stairs, sometimes called winder or pie-shaped stairs, can feel tricky. This simple guide empowers you to take precise measurements, ensuring your custom-made Oak Valley Designs treads will elevate your staircase with a flawless, secure fit.
Steps
Step 1: Measure Your Tread Depth
5 minutesWith your tape measure, find the depth of each stair tread. This is the distance from the front edge (what we call the 'nosing') to the very back where it meets the vertical part (the 'riser'). Write this number down for every single step to ensure a perfect, custom-fit.
Watch: Measure Stair Tread DepthStep 2: Determine Your Tread Width
5 minutesMeasure the width of each stair from side to side. If you have a wall on both sides, measure wall-to-wall. If you have spindles or a handrail post, measure from the wall to the *inside* edge of that obstruction. This ensures your new tread will fit neatly in the available space. Don't forget to record this measurement for each tread.

5 minutesThe 'nosing' is the edge of your tread that hangs over the riser below. Measure how far it sticks out. While this measurement is often the same for every step, it's a crucial safety check to verify it on each one. A consistent nosing helps ensure stability and peace of mind. Record this for each tread.

3 minutesFor the group of turning stairs, measure the total vertical height, or 'rise'. Start your tape measure at the floor level of the bottom landing and extend it straight up to the floor level of the top landing of that section. This single measurement helps us understand the overall geometry of your turn. Write it down.
Watch: Measure Total Staircase Height (Method 1)Step 5: Calculate the Total Run
3 minutesMeasure the total horizontal distance, or 'run,' of the turning section. Place your tape measure against the nosing of the very first turning tread and extend it horizontally to the back of the very last turning tread in the sequence. This gives us the complete footprint of the turn. Record this measurement carefully.

10 minutesYou've done the hard work! Now, create a simple, organized list or sketch. For each step, note its depth, width, and nosing overhang. Then, add the total rise and run for the turning section. Clearly labeling each number is the key to a stress-free ordering process and ensures your custom-made treads will be a perfect match for your home.
