Step 2 · Step 2: Determine Your Tread Width

Measure the width of each stair from side to side. If you have a wall on both sides, measure wall-to-wall. If you have spindles or a handrail post, measure from the wall to the *inside* edge of that obstruction. This ensures your new tread will fit neatly in the available space. Don't forget to record this measurement for each tread.
