Prepare for the Third Coat — Step 4: The Secret to a Silky-Smooth Finish
Part of project
Apply Finish to Stair Treads · Step 4 of 6
In this video
Before applying the third coat, the surface needs light preparation. Use 320-grit sandpaper and lightly sand the entire surface. The goal is to knock down any dust nibs or minor imperfections that may have settled in the previous coats. Avoid heavy pressure. After sanding, the surface might have a white, powdery residue. Clean this residue using a slightly damp paper towel, wiping gently across the surface. Alternatively, a tack cloth is the best option for completely removing all dust.
