Allow Drying and Optional Sanding — Step 3: Patience is a Virtue—Let It Dry

Apply Finish to Stair Treads · Step 3 of 6

After applying each coat of polyurethane, it's essential to allow proper drying time before proceeding. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions on the polyurethane can for the recommended drying time, which typically ranges from a few hours to a full day. Once a coat has dried, you can optionally lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220-grit). This sanding step is not always necessary but can help ensure a smoother surface and promote better adhesion for subsequent coats. If you do sand, make sure to thoroughly clean off any sanding dust before applying the next coat.
