Apply Subsequent Coats and Finish — Step 5: Build Up Durability, Layer by Layer
Part of project
Apply Finish to Stair Treads · Step 5 of 6
In this video
Apply additional coats of polyurethane using the same technique as the first coat: thin, even layers applied with a foam brush, brushing with the wood grain. The presenter suggests looking at the surface from an angle to easily spot any dry spots or areas you might have missed. For this particular project, he applied a total of six coats to achieve a thick, durable finish. Remember to allow each coat to dry for at least two hours, and repeat the light sanding (Step 2) and tack cloth cleaning (Step 3) processes between each subsequent coat to maintain smoothness and ensure optimal adhesion.
